What SEO Can and Cannot Do

A grounded look at realistic SEO expectations — and why guarantees are a warning sign.

What SEO Can and Cannot Do — SEO

SEO — search engine optimisation — is one of the highest-return marketing channels available, and one of the most misunderstood. Setting honest expectations protects your investment and helps you spot the difference between a real partner and someone selling smoke.

What SEO can do

It can fix the technical barriers that stop search engines understanding your site, help the right people find you for the things they actually search, and compound over time into a durable stream of enquiries you don't pay for per click. For a local business, strong local SEO can put you in front of nearby customers at the exact moment they're looking to buy.

What SEO cannot do

It cannot guarantee the number-one spot, deliver results overnight, or rescue a website that genuinely isn't useful. Search engines exist to serve their users, so the only reliable long-term strategy is to deserve the ranking — by being fast, clear, trustworthy and genuinely helpful.

Why guarantees are a red flag

Nobody controls the search results, so nobody can honestly guarantee a specific ranking. When someone promises 'number one on Google', they're either misunderstanding how it works or hoping you do. Good SEO people guarantee sound work and honest reporting — never a specific position.

The honest approach

Get the technical foundations right, publish content that answers real customer questions, keep your Google Business Profile accurate, earn a few genuine mentions and reviews, and measure everything transparently. It's less glamorous than magic promises — but it's the version that actually works, and keeps working.
